Architectural Sign Associates was commissioned to develop a sign-based wayfinding system for the Pentagon to enable visually impaired users to independently navigate the complex facility.
For such a large facility, with many symmetrical or structurally similar areas, continuous orientation became the foundation for successful wayfinding. To maximize accessibility for the visually impaired, signs were proposed at all corners to provide consistent orientation and clear wayfinding information at expected locations.
Tactile beads were added to sign edges to indicate the tactile and braille portion of each sign. Additionally large symbols are used in concert with a high-contrast color palette to increase accessibility for the visually impaired.
