Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC
Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh’s former location consisted of three buildings constructed decades apart. In one building, modern mechanical systems required different ceiling heights, creating a mismatch of floors that complicated wayfinding.
Architectural Sign Associates conducted a needs assessment for the hospital, and programmed a new wayfinding system. The program incorporated existing color-coding based on elevator banks, and integrated directories, maps, overhead and wall-mounted signs with a childlike flair to present the hospital with a cohesive wayfinding solution.
Custom symbols were developed and dimensional signs were designed to fit the child-friendly theme, in order to enhance the welcoming atmosphere and promote healing.
